That Time of Year - Postscript

Judging by the comments on the last post we all do a bit of ‘regifting’, that's good, it’s ecologically sound behaviour and saves cash - but there are rules: (1) check that the book you’re handing on isn’t dedicated to you in the original giver’s hand and (2) do remember where the gift came from, last year my parents (unwittingly?) returned a bottle of homemade Sloe Gin to their daughter who had lovingly made it with her own fair hands!

Do you still visit here Dad?

  1. I was given a painting by an artist relative who USUALLY does very nice work.

For some reason, he gave me a painting I don't like at all (perhaps no one would buy it) and now I'm stuck with it and feel the need to display it as he comes over to visit from time to time.

    Sigh.

  2. We got married back inthe day when people here gave actual presents and not wads of cash which now seems to be the norm. Yes, toasters galore, 27 electric skillets (they were all the rage!) and 5 fireside coal scuttles. We had dinner sets, tea sets and breakfast sets coming out of every cupboard! Luckily, a lot of our friends got married the same year, and the following year. If any of them got their own gift back they never said! :¬)

  3. Parents, eh?!
What did you say when you received it back?

  4. When my sister was married in 1973, she received a lot of duplicate gifts. So I scored a harvest gold electric mixer, toaster oven (which I still use!), and avocado green bunt cake pan!

  5. It could well be worth giving people things you'd be delighted to receive the following year. Though it might be awfully disappointing if they gave it to someone else.

  6. I don't know why we don't just buy one symbolic gift that we pass back and forth to each other every year. Eventually, the tatty piece of bad knitting (for example) will become viewed as a sacred ritual cloth of great significance. I think that's how religions get started.

  7. I like what Louciao says, it's probably true about religions!

  8. MJ - Art gifts - they're tough

Map - Weddings are the worst for gifting, I think it's gone too far the other way now, I didn't get a single toaster or a coal scuttle.

Scarlet - I was delighted because it is now properly aged and there were no sloes around here last year.

LX - I'd love a bunt cake pan, what are bunt cakes like ... A bit fishy?

Eryl - I'm not sure if my stepson will be thrilled with the bottle of Lynx he'll be getting back this year, young men's tastes do change.

Loucaio and Scarlet - that is a real insight, I may have to see if I can get a religion started this year. Another idea might be to start a bit of tatty knitting and challenge the reciever to progress the project, it passes on and grows that way it becomes Community Art and can be displayed in a public place
