Still Gruntled

Rootling around in Bristol's delicatessens is the surest way that I know of staying gruntled. On one of these expeditions today I was diverted from a meringue hunt by a man with a lot of cheese.

I came away meringueless but accompanied by a perfect lump of wrinkly skinned Robiola. My new BFF suggested that I use some of it in this recipe from the legendary Silver Spoon cookbook.

Robiola Triangles

some Butter
some olive oil
8 slices of bread, crusts removed
7oz robiola cheese
1 tablespoon grated Parmesan
1 lightly beaten egg
2 tablespoons double cream
some salt

Pre heat oven to 350 F. Grease a baking sheet with butter. Cut each slice of bread into two triangles, drizzle each with olive oil and a pinch of salt.

Mash the robiola in a bowl and stir in the Parmesan, egg and cream until fully mixed. Spread the mixture on the bread triangles and place on the prepared baking sheet, bake for about 10 minutes – serve hot.

Earlier in the week we staged a pie-in, the last lunch party for the departing crew. Dazed by lack of sleep we were grateful for the instructions on how to manage this product.

  1. All the pies seem to feature a lovely pastry, so I'm in!

  2. Sounds delish, but it must have been some cheese to tear you away from a meringue.

  11. Posh cheese on toast? Fantastic.

Wikipedia tells me it has a 'sweet, yielding taste', which sounds a bit creepy.

  12. yeah i wikipediaed it too and the cross between old socks and jasmine sounds promising...the thing about living in France is that we get incredible cheese but there's no way i could find Robiole, i've never even heard of it because you get mozzarella, and once or twice I've seen a dull cheddar as a novelty, but if not it's all french-

The Brits are much more adventurous, you lucky things...those delicatessens sound amazing

  13. Dedene - I like straightforward instructions

Mrs Cow - 'frequently diverted by cheese' could be my family motto, I'll make up a crest.

Glory - funny how food and wine descriptions can be so off-putting?

Screamish - I know all about the French cheese chauvinism. Italy is cheese world ruler for me.

  14. I think you should write a book on the art of gruntlement. I'll look out for Robiola especially to make that delicious sounding recipe. Not sure that I could ever be diverted from a meringue hunt.

  15. I love the silver spoon. On a lucky day, Big M might get it off the shelve and cook for me. You have no idea how much I'd give for someone to constantly cook for me.

A good slogan for a T-shirt... and for those of us scared of having a tattoo...

  19. The thing I miss a lot about doing WW is the eating of cheese. I adore the stuff, so does Mr FF and we just daren't buy it.

As for pies - the food of the gods. If I knew I was going to die next week I think I would spend the rest of the week eating pies, cheese, cheesecake and chocolate.
